Breaking Barriers to Healthcare: Grameen Kalyan Pilots HPV (Human Pappiloma Virus) Cervical Cancer Screening Initiative
A mother is often the heart of her family, holding the household together with unwavering dedication. Yet, across Bangladesh, thousands of families face devastating emotional and financial tragedies each year due to silent, preventable diseases like cervical and breast cancer.
In rural and low-income communities, the tragedy of late detection goes beyond physical suffering; it frequently plunges families into extreme poverty as they are forced to sell assets and take on crushing debt to afford late-stage treatment.
Recognizing that health is a fundamental right and not a luxury, Grameen Kalyan—a not-for-profit Primary Healthcare company embedded with the principles of Social Business and founded by Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus—has taken a definitive step to combat these silent killers, specifically in the rural areas. On April 19, 2026, the organization launched a life-saving pilot project offering 20,000 completely free HPV cervical cancer screening and primary clinical breast examination to those who need them most. The objective of this launching is to conduct a research to find out the rate of affected women who find difficulties in financing their healthcare in rural settings.
The initiative is strategically designed to reach marginalized populations, specifically targeting underprivileged women between the ages of 30 and 60 who have been married for over ten years. By removing the financial barriers entirely, Grameen Kalyan is bringing vital preventative care directly to the community level.
Screenings are currently underway at eight of Grameen Kalyan’s internal health centers in the Savar region. The message to the community is clear and urgent: do not wait for symptoms to appear. Early detection makes these cancers highly treatable and often entirely curable. PCR based Molecular Laboratory facility has been also established in the Shuapur Health Center for HPV tests.
To ensure the highest medical standards, Grameen Kalyan is executing this initiative alongside a robust coalition of renowned technical partners. Collaborators include the Oncology Club (Bangladesh), the Elekta Foundation (Sweden), and Global Health Catalyst (USA). This synergy of national and international expertise guarantees that marginalized communities receive world-class care right at their doorsteps. The screening centers operate under the direct supervision of renowned oncology experts.
Crucially, the support does not end at screening. If a patient’s tests are found positive, a direct referral pathway is in place. Patients are seamlessly guided to the government owned National Institute of Cancer Research Hospital (NICRH), where they undergo necessary diagnostic tests to confirm their condition and receive complete assistance for further medical arrangements and treatments.
Beyond immediate patient care, Grameen Kalyan is looking toward the future of global oncology. Following the completion of the 20,000 screenings, the organization will compile the data into a comprehensive research project in collaboration with the Oncology Club. This research will leverage local data to help improve cancer care strategies globally.
